Since Dennison Rice founded the business in 1939, we’ve been committed to delivering unparalleled quality and service to both commercial contractors and homeowners. Today, as a family-owned and operated company, we continue to uphold that legacy with a focus on reliability, expertise, and community. 

Originally established to provide top-quality lumber and building materials, Rice Lumber has grown alongside the needs of Vermont’s building community. In 1970, Wes Carroll, Deek Brooker, and Fred Disperto took ownership, guiding the company through a period of steady growth. Fifteen years later, Wes Carroll became sole owner, reinforcing a strong commitment to customer service and long-term relationships. 

In 1992, the next generation, James, Shelley, Jay, and David Carroll, stepped in to carry the business forward. As lifelong Vermonters, they brought a deep understanding of the local building industry and a dedication to maintaining Rice Lumber’s reputation for excellence. 

A major milestone came in 2018 with the expansion and relocation of our facilities. This investment significantly grew our yard capacity and transformed how we serve our customers. With more space, improved logistics, and a fully integrated drive-through warehouse, we’re able to stock a deeper inventory, improve efficiency, and provide faster, more reliable service, especially during the busiest parts of the building season. 

Today, Rice Lumber is more than just a lumber yard, we’re a true one-stop shop for building. From framing to finish, we supply the materials needed to build an entire home, including framing lumber, siding, roofing, flooring, windows and doors, decking, and railing. Our expanded showroom allows customers to explore product options in person, while our fully stocked hardware store ensures you have access to the tools, fasteners, and jobsite essentials needed to get the job done right.
